Objective (from https://www.antarctica-insync.org)
The One Planet – Polar Summit in Paris (November 2023) marked the launch of Antarctica InSync, a UNESCO-led initiative under the UN Ocean Decade. The programme seeks to deepen scientific understanding of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by studying the links between ice, ocean, climate, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Its goal is to generate knowledge that can guide marine protection and global decision-making in the face of rising sea levels and melting ice sheets. Given the challenges of working in such a remote and extreme environment, the project emphasizes international collaboration, with the Alfred Wegener Institute coordinating efforts alongside partners from multiple countries. Beginning with a planning phase in 2024, the programme will advance to large-scale field campaigns between 2027 and 2030, making comprehensive observations by land, sea, and air. Ultimately, Antarctica InSync aims to contribute to sustainable ocean management and global climate resilience.
